Sandra Mesics is a registered nurse and midwife and has been the director of St. Luke’s School of Nursing since 2004. In this conversation with AJ Lewis, Sandy describes accessing hormones and surgery in the 1970s, the different groups she was involved with, including United Transvestites Transsexual Society, Transsexual Action Organization, and organizing the first Fantasia Fair. She also shares her extensive knowledge of early trans print culture, based on her experience working at Neptune Productions, where she wrote articles, advice, and fiction for a variety of trans and queer publications in the 1970s. In addition, she discusses becoming a nurse during the AIDS crisis, how trans healthcare has changed, and her experiences as a lesbian.
