Erica Dawn Lyle is a multihyphenate artist, author of several books, and recently toured with Bikini Kill as the band’s guitar player. Speaking from a trans commune in her home state of Florida, Lyle reflects on her life growing up in a small town north of Miami where she spent her days deep in nature exploring the pine forests. After being kicked out of her home at 17, Lylefound refuge in the Miami punk scene and later in San Francisco where she was active in community organizing around gentrification and involved in anti-war resistance. Lyle moved to New York City in the 2010s and discusses her experience of struggling to find community and transitioning after the election of Donald Trump. She shares insights on improv music as a timeless practice and raising funds for Stop Cop City, the effort to save Atlanta’s forest. Theinterview concludes with Lyle’s thoughts on how to build a sustainable future for trans people amidst a cascade of anti-trans legislative attacks.
