← Interview of Gavilán Rayna Russom
Gavilán Rayna Rossum talks about the process of arriving on her true name,explaining the familial roots and etymology that led to the choice. She recounts a trip to Brazil where a sighting of birds of prey inspired her first name change, taking hawk in Spanish as her true first name, Gavilán. However, she goes by either Rayna (using her middle name the way others may use their first or Gavilán Rayna Rossum, her full name. Rayna details her experience growing up in Providence, RI, queer in a dangerous almostlawless environment where contract killings weren’t uncommon. She wasn’t exempt from gender-based violence but the underground environment also promoted self exploration and her budding interest in music. She talks about the many great communities she is a part of (from New York to Cuba toCalifornia to Berlin) and which supported her coming out in a way that wasn’t possible back in Providence. Particularly, she speaks about how the increased trans visibility she found when she moved to New York helped her come into herself. Rayna is the founder and current director of Voluminous Arts. It is her mission make a space for transgender artists to find community, experiment with their art, and explore how art brings people together.
